A feast of water lilies begins in the village of Malak Preslavets

On the 17th of June in the village of Malak Preslavets near Silistra will be held  Water Lily Feast. The celebration of white water flowers is not accidental. It is in Malak Preslavets the largest colony in Bulgaria on a white water lily, which is a protected plant and is included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The flowers in the lake near the village extend over a territory of 46 acres.

The program of the festival includes folklore excerpts of the community centers in the region and retirement artistic groups, competition for children’s drawings and competition for best fisherman for children and young people up to 18 years of age. In the past, when water lilies were not a protected species, local eat the flowers, just as they do today in parts of Asia. According to older people who remember their taste, they were very sweet.

More enterprising youngsters, however, sold lilies to the passengers of the shuttles in the port of the village. The lake with water lilies is located about 4 km away from Malak Preslavets and is in close proximity to the Danube River. Only 30 km away is the Srebarna Reserve. In the area of ​​the village, there are 180 different plants and 147 species of birds.
