International Festival of Babuger Masks and Games
On January 11, 2014, for a 11th consecutive year, will be held the Mummer’s Festival “Simitlia – the ancient land of the mummers.” Babuger is the Bulgarian word for a specific kind of mummer. The masquerade will be attended by a record number of mummers – 27 groups from all over Bulgaria are going to take part in the event.
Some of the most beautiful and interesting Bulgarian folk customs and traditions will be presented by participants from Tundzha, Karlovo, Elin Pelin, Kalolifer, Sopot, Sapareva Banya, Burgas, Petrich, Kyustendil and Gotse Delchev.
The hosts from Simitli will be represented by eight mummer groups and will recreate local rituals that have been preserved to our days in the villages of Krupnik, Polena, Cherniche, Poleto, Brezhani, Zheleznitza as well as in the town of Simitli. Due to the great interest of Bulgarian groups, this year the mummers from Simitli will join only two mixed groups.
This year “Simitlia – the ancient land of the mummers.” is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria.
