Mummers chase evil and Covid-19 away from Pernik region

Although the Surva International Masquerade Festival will not be held in Pernik this year due to the non-proliferation measures of Kovid-19, the tradition will be observed in the villages in the region. Men and young people dressed in skins and scary masks will ritually try to chase away the evil spirits and Covid-19 with the noise of bells and dances.

Ritual fires will be lit on the evening of January 14. Mummers, unlike other years, will not enter the houses of their neighbours. The groups will follow a preliminary route, which in most villages is only on the main street. Representatives will monitor whether the audience is wearing masks and keeps a distance.

I love to travel because of the encounters with diverse people and cultures and the chance to touch other worlds. And this can happen even without leaving the borders of your own country. For example, at a festival, you can travel thousands of years and dozens of borders without leaving your place. For me, the journey is not only beautiful landscapes and ancient landmarks but also thousands of human stories. Let's learn them together.
