Palma de Mallorca prohibits rental apartments for tourists

Spanish resort Palma de Mallorca forbids apartment owners to rent housing to tourists. Thus, the town of Balearic Islands became the first in Spain to introduce this measure. The massive complaints of residents of the resort have been caused by the rising rents of dwellings due to the constant flow of tourists.

City mayor Antoni Ortega has announced that the ban will be introduced in July and will be a model for cities suffering from mass tourism, according to the BBC. Between 2015 and 2017 the number of unregulated apartments offered to tourists increased by 50%. In Palma de Mallorca, part of the tourists’ growth is also due to renting out homes through sites and apps.
