Plovdiv and the region of the Thracian valley are ahead of one of the most famous world wine regions – Provence in France. The Bulgarian town took the prestigious second place in the rankings of Wine Enthusiast as the best destination in the world for wine tourism. Plovdiv is surpassed only by Kafayate in Argentina. Plovdiv boasts over 7000 years tradition in making wine.
The excellent second place is given to Plovdiv. Because of the Bulgarian wines and the richness of architectural and historical landmarks in the region. Behind the Bulgarian are prestigious and famous wine regions. The third position is assigned to the Canary Islands in Spain. In the ranking followed Marlborou / New Zealand /, Provence / France /, London / UK / , Calistoga / Napa Valley, California, USA / , Sicily / Italy /, Rheingau / Germany / and Hood River / USA/.
Plovdiv was at the heart of the wine world last year when the most prestigious independent wine competition in the world Concours Mondial de Bruxelles took place. Bulgaria was preferred to host the prestigious forum in a very close competition. Over 320 professional judges (oenologists, sommeliers, wine journalists, buyers and importers of wine) from 52 nations tasted and evaluated over 9,000 wines and spirits from 55 countries in Plovdiv last year.
