Scarecrows and traditional crafts in Etara

At first unusual combination turns out to be an entirely successful concept in the ethnographic open-air museum of Etara. There are dozens of scarecrows, along with traditional crafts and typical Renaissance houses from the Grabrov region. The sympathetic scars you will see along the alleys of the complex are actually made during the National Botanic Scarecrow Competition in Etara.

The construction of the unique place situated 8 km from Gabrovo started in 1962. The idea grew in the enthusiastic and amateur artist Lazar Donev. In fact, the first house in the architectural reserve was made just like his grandfather’s house. The official opening of Etara was on Sept. 7, 1964.

I love history, to walk through old cobblestone streets, to smell the air of the past times and to feel the legends in the air. And I'm lucky to have been born in a country with a glorious past and a lot of stories to tell. Bulgaria was founded more than 1,300 years ago and has never changed its name. But the life of people, their everyday habits, their traditions, their music and their art have changed over the centuries. I invite you to take a walk through the different ages of Bulgaria and to get to know it better.
