Spa centres in the following years are expected to be open in the old baths in Sofia’s neighbourhoods Bankya, Ovcha kupel and Gorna Banya. The reconstruction project in Bankya is the most advanced. All the details of the bathroom built in 1911 will be restored. The building is the work of Munich Professor Hoheder.
It is planned that Bankya Spa Center will start to welcome guests next year. The royal baths, dressing rooms and ceramic pavements from the beginning of the last century will be restored. Currently, the roof restoration activities are being carried out, the building is being strengthened and the restoration of the architectural elements has begun.
Sofia Municipality has asked the state to manage also the baths in the metropolitan areas of Ovcha Kupel and Gorna Banya. Funding has already been provided to rebuild the first one in a spa centre, and the second one is looking for funds, announced Sofia Municipality. A large number of people in Sofia insist that the spa centre, which is now transformed into a Museum of Sofia, should be re-started as balneology.
