As usual this year again a traditional Bulgarian dance called horo will stretch across the icy waters of the Tundzha River near Kalofer. The custom is observed every year on Epiphany. Young and older man of the village dress up in festive costumes and dance in the cold river to the sound of bagpipes and drums. The custom is applying to be enlisted in the UNESCO list of World Heritage.
The Bulgarain tradition is held from men around the country. They throw themselves into the icy waters of rivers and seas to be healthy the next year. According to the custom a cross is thrown by a priest in the cold waters and everyone figths to get it before the others. The cross remains for this man who take it out of the water. In Kalofer the holy cross is given to the youngest boy involved in the ritual no matter who suceed to takes it out. Often in the ritual take place children who are 3 or 4 years old.
In the Rhodopes on this day are thrown couples who got married last year are throun in the winter waters to be healthy. According to the Christian faith precisely on January 6th is named himself Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Therefore, the festival is among the most revered in the country. Legend says that the sky opens on the night before the holy day and then everyone can solicit fulfillment of the most cherished dreams.
