The water in the Dambala region near the village of Letovnik, Momchilgrad municipality treats incurable diseases. Its power is the strongest just before sunrise on the 5th versus 6th May. At least so believe the thousands of Bulgarians and Muslims who spend the night outdoors to meet the sun in the area and sip from miraculous water with the sunrise.
In order for the miracle to happen, a certain ritual must be observed. At midnight the patient is washed by wetting the water flowing from the cliffs first to the eyes, then to his ears, his head, his chest, his hands and his feet. The ritual washing is repeated three times and at the same time, the ill have to repeat something like a mantra – The pain here to stay, let there be health for me and all my relatives. Then he has to put a coin in the trough of the fountain and leave a piece of his garment worn on the diseased site. It should be bound to the neighboring trees and left to hang between heaven and earth to stay in this space the pain. At sunrise, the believers leave the place and sometimes take some of the water with them.
According to the legend, the miraculous water did not appear accidentally in this place, and the gushing was the work of the 40 Alevi saints – Kirklar. These were spirits visible only to the righteous and honest people. They possessed divine power and did only good things. Once they walked past Dambala and stopped there to have a lunch. But the saints did not have water with themselves and could not quench their thirst.
Then one of them – Yaran Baba – struck the rock with a fist and water flowed from it. But it was so much that threatened to drown the neighboring village of Letovnik. That is why the saint had snapped the hole in the rock, but let it drip. Even today the drops flow from the vertical rocks, and the saint is revered by the local Alevi population.
